Cost guide

What flooring installation costs, by material

Installation is its own number, separate from the material, and it ranges from a dollar a square foot for carpet to twenty for stone. The table below is labor alone at national averages. It is the number to compare between quotes, because two contractors quoting the same product line can only differ on this.

$2–$17 per square foot for labor alone
Full range $1.50–$20. Typical installed cost is the middle half of the national range, materials and labor at average rates. Builder-grade product with the cheapest crew runs under it; premium product with a specialist runs over.

What moves it

Three things that change the price

  1. The material: stretched carpet is the cheapest labor, tile and stone the most
  2. What is under it: a flat, sound subfloor installs fast; one that needs leveling does not
  3. The room: cuts, closets, stairs and patterns add hours that a square-foot rate hides
